UPC, Code 128, or QR Code: Which One Does Your Product Need?

Choose the right code for retail checkout, internal inventory, traceability, customer links, and packaging—and understand what a generator does not provide.

The code type follows the job it needs to do.

UPC-A is commonly used for US retail checkout and requires a properly assigned GTIN. EAN-13 serves a similar retail identification role in many markets. Generating the bars does not create ownership of the number.

Build the calculation from reliable inputs

Code 128 can encode letters and numbers, making it practical for internal SKUs, lots, warehouse locations, and work-in-process labels. QR codes hold more information and are useful for URLs, instructions, menus, forms, or customer-facing traceability pages.

Turn the answer into a repeatable process

Size, quiet zones, contrast, printer resolution, surface, and scanner distance determine whether a valid code works in practice. Never stretch artwork to fit. Print at actual size and test with the intended device before producing labels in volume.

Try it with your own numbers

Create local artwork with the free barcode and QR code generator and check retail placement with the UPC/GTIN layout checker.
