Candle Wax and Fragrance: Calculate Fill Weight Before You Pour

Convert vessel capacity to wax blend weight, include fragrance load, and plan a test batch without confusing fluid ounces and ounces by weight.

The “8 oz jar” name rarely means eight ounces of candle wax.

Container names often describe nominal water capacity or packaging convention. Wax and fragrance have different densities, and safe fill height leaves headspace. Measure the intended fill line with water, convert using an appropriate density factor, and confirm with an actual test pour.

Build the calculation from reliable inputs

Decide whether fragrance load is calculated against wax weight or total blend according to the supplier’s convention. Check the wax manufacturer’s recommended range, IFRA information for the fragrance use, and how load affects wick behavior and cure.

Turn the answer into a repeatable process

Make a small overage for transfer loss, record vessel model and lot, and weigh finished candles after cooling. Use actual average fill weight for production planning and label net quantity checks.
