HLB Calculator for Lotions: Choosing an Emulsifier for an Oil Blend

Calculate the weighted required HLB of an oil phase and a starting emulsifier blend while keeping supplier guidance, process, stability, preservation, and testing in control.

The hydrophilic-lipophilic balance method can help formulators choose a starting emulsifier system for some oil-in-water emulsions. It does not prove that a lotion will be stable, preserved, safe, compatible with packaging, or suitable for sale.

Calculate the oil phase’s weighted required HLB

List each oil-phase component included in the HLB calculation, its mass or share of the calculated oil blend, and the required-HLB value from an appropriate technical source. Then calculate:

blend required HLB = sum(component fraction × component required HLB)

The fractions used in this calculation must total 1.00, or 100% of the included oil blend. Do not weight values against the entire lotion when the method calls for weighting within the oil phase.

Example: an included oil blend that is 60% component A at required HLB 7 and 40% component B at required HLB 11 has a weighted target of 8.6. That number is a formulation starting point, not a guaranteed emulsifier choice.

Estimate an emulsifier blend

If a supplier-supported high-HLB emulsifier and low-HLB emulsifier are appropriate for the formula, a blend fraction can be estimated between their HLB values. Check the result against the supplier’s recommended use level, process temperature, phase, electrolyte tolerance, pH range, and incompatibilities.

Many modern emulsifiers and polymeric systems are not selected well by a simple classical HLB calculation. Follow raw-material technical data and test the full system rather than forcing every emulsifier into the model.

Run controlled prototypes

Record formula revision, supplier and lot, actual weights, phase temperatures, mixing equipment, shear, addition sequence, cool-down, pH, viscosity, appearance, odor, fill, and packaging. Evaluate stability under justified conditions and complete appropriate microbiological preservation work for water-containing products.

Treat the result as a hypothesis

HLB narrows an experiment. It does not account fully for oil polarity, emulsifier chemistry, thickeners, electrolytes, active ingredients, fragrance, process energy, droplet size, preservation, packaging, or storage. Qualified formulation and safety review remain necessary for commercial cosmetics.
