10 Quality Checks to Add to a Production Work Order

A production work order should present the checks required for that product and process at the moment they matter. A generic end-of-run checklist cannot recover missing process evidence.

10 useful check categories

1. Material identity and status: correct item, lot, approval, expiry, and release state.
2. Formula and document revision: exact approved recipe, routing, label, and packaging specification.
3. Pre-operation readiness: sanitation, line clearance, equipment condition, calibration, and prior-product removal.
4. Allergen and changeover verification: sequence, cleaning, dedicated tools, and label controls required by the plan.
5. Process parameters: actual time, temperature, pH, water activity, Brix, speed, pressure, or other approved measurement.
6. Sensory or physical attributes: appearance, odor, texture, dimensions, viscosity, weight, or color against a defined standard.
7. Fill and net quantity controls: tare, target, observed samples, frequency, and corrective action.
8. Packaging integrity: closure, seal, code readability, correct components, and damage.
9. Yield and reconciliation: input, bulk output, good units, samples, waste, rejects, and rework.
10. Final review and disposition: release, hold, rework, reject, or destroy with authorized identity and time.

Make each check executable

Define the method, instrument, unit, target or limit, frequency, sample size, responsible role, evidence, and response to failure. Record the observed value rather than only “pass” whenever the value supports the decision.

A failed or missing required check should stop the affected step or hold the associated lots until authorized disposition. Do not let a user bypass the control through bulk completion, API, import, or partner access.
